Las Vegas High’s Major commits to Southern Utah basketball, becomes third from family to receive scholarship

When a Southern Utah University basketball coach offered Las Vegas High senior Juwan Major a scholarship after a game last week, the 6-foot-3 senior guard didn’t hesitate giving a verbal commitment.

Most athletes takes multiple campus visits on the recruiting trail, looking for the right fit of athletics and academics, and a comfort level with a new city.

Despite not visiting the Cedar City, Utah, school, Major had no reservations about committing. Southern Utah coaches had been to a few Las Vegas practices and sold him on his chances of thriving in their program. And, more important, the school is about a three-hour drive from his home base in Southern Nevada.

Major also had a scholarship offer from Portland State, and received interest from Arizona State and Detroit.

“I felt a lot of comfort with their coaches,” Major said. “I always wanted to go somewhere where I felt wanted, and those coaches definitely wanted me (at Southern Utah).”

Major is the third from his family to receive a college scholarship.

His twin sister, Diamond Major, signed in November with the UNLV women’s basketball team. His older brother, Marquan Major, just finished his redshirt freshman season on the Idaho football team.

The fortune of receiving a scholarship for three children isn’t lost on the family.

“They feel really accomplished as parents. They just love it,” Juwan Major said. “They did such a good job of raising us and making sure we had everything we needed.”
