County commissioners vote to give themselves 10 percent pay raise

Despite continued demands on the county budget, Clark County commissioners approved a 10 percent raise for themselves at their Tuesday meeting.

The issue: Commissioners voted whether to approve a salary increase after a 2011 pay cut and several years without a raise.

The vote: Approved 5-2, with Commissioners Steve Sisolak and Larry Brown in opposition.

What it means: Commissioners will have the option of taking a 10 percent raise, which would increase their salaries to $80,008. The raise will be given in two equal parts, one in July and another in January.

Commissioner salaries have not increased since 2008. In 2011, commissioners agreed to a 2 percent pay cut that also was imposed on other county employees.

Since 2005, the salary for a commissioner has increased by 6 percent, the lowest of any county employee group, according to County Manager Don Burnette.

“Your wage movements going back to 2005 are substantially less than what you find with other employee groups,” Burnette said.

In 2007, the Legislature passed a bill allowing the maximum salaries of county commission boards across the state to increase by 4 percent annually over four years. Clark County commissioners approved 4 percent raises in 2007 and 2008 but declined to take them in 2009 and 2010 as the economy crumbled and the county budget shrank.

The raise approved Tuesday brings the commissioners’ salaries up to 2010 levels and undoes the 2011 pay cut.

Although the county’s financial standing has improved, Sisolak said several factors — including ongoing labor negotiations, a requested budget increase for Metro Police and a lack of pay increases for staff — prevented him from supporting the salary increases.

Commissioners do have the option of foregoing the raise. Susan Brager and Mary Beth Scow both indicated that although they supported the pay increase for their colleagues, they would not take it themselves.

  3. I love the attitude of Brager and Scow. I couldn't possibly vote myself a pay raise but for my colleagues sake I will!
    For that lack of backbone and bad logic those two should be the first voted out.

  4. Really? You've done that good a job?

    This takes gall and lots of it. Maybe a system where raises are based on merit and have to be justified joined with a mechanism to reduce pay by equal amounts for unsatisfactory performance would be more just.

    I'd like to see the commissioners have to justify their raises at a public forum. As their employers tax payers have the right to speak on this issue. Expressing disapproval at the polls is no longer completely valid in this time of high dollar campaign financing and special interests.

    Maybe they do rate a raise, but not because they say so and vote it for themselves.

  5. 7 Democrats on the County Commission and they vote themselves a 10% increase during this recession/depression.

    Not surprising.

    Also not surprising The Sun story fails to mention they are all Democrats.

  6. Funny minimum wage is still 7.25 in this state and not budging. Maybe we should vote these people out and keep salaries down.

  7. SS only went up 1.7% this year, and the county commission gets a TEN PERCENT RAISE? I would like to hear them justify it....like RIGHT NOW.

  8. How come out of the CCFD debacle no one was fired? As far as I can see the commissioners have failed the county and have abetted the fraud of millions of dollars that the firefighters stole. Nothing happened. Was the fire chief or any of the supervisors fired for allowing it. Were any firefighters prosecuted for fraud. Nope, nothing. Everyone got to keep their job as overpaying as it is.

  9. Wow 10% , in two portions within six months of each other too. Now thats some tough negotiating ,oh wait there was none they just voted it in. I can see 10% but over a three year period. The real workers in this world would love to get 10% in less than a years time. Arrogance at it's best.
