Woman killed, child critical in crash with pickup truck

Updated Tuesday, April 2, 2013 | 5:10 p.m.

A 54-year-old woman died Tuesday after she ran a red light and her car collided with a pickup truck at Decatur Boulevard and Gowan Road, North Las Vegas Police spokeswoman Chrissie Coon said.

The crash was reported about 9:40 a.m., Coon said. The initial investigation revealed the woman, who was driving north on Decatur, ran a red light and was hit by the pickup truck, which was heading west on Gowan, Coon said.

Evidence at the scene indicated the woman may been distracted by her cellphone, Coon said.

The woman was transported to University Medical Center, where she died, Coon said. A 4- to 6-year-old child in the car also was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Police did not provide the child's gender.

The 71-year-old man who was driving the pickup truck suffered serious injuries, Coon said.

The intersection was shut down and is expected to remain closed for several more hours, she said.

The intersection of Gowan Road and Decatur Boulevard has been reopened, she said.

  1. Someone needs to get the directions right. Decatur runs North/South and Gowan is East/West.

  2. Criticism aside, I know that intersection well as I live just a few blocks away and use it a lot.

The southeast corner has a brick wall around it that severely limits visibility. Assuming the pickup was going North on Decatur he would have had no warning to speak of.

As for the woman possibly being distracted, well, every parent (or grandparent) knows that a child can do that, but I have to wonder if the evidence was a cell phone with a text on it. (Keep in mind that I am not a proponent of additional laws against texting, the current laws that cover distracted driving should be sufficient.)

As an aside, I driving near the area when I went to vote and to the store. When going to the polling location at Alexander and Allen I saw a traffic cop had a car pulled over on Alexander. When going to the store from there, I saw the same cop with another car pulled over on Valley. Then when coming back from the store he yet a third car pulled over going the other way on Valley.

Given that a police presence is not that common at that location it seems a bit late for the victims above for them to be enforcing the traffic laws now.

  3. "Evidence at the scene indicated the woman may been distracted"

Food? Makeup? Navigation? Coffee? Further details would prove interesting.

  4. Did she run the red light right after it changed or did she full on plow through a red? Not condoning the behavior, but there is a difference.
