CARSON CITY — Opponents say the Southern Nevada Water Authority used “obfuscation and distortion” in presenting evidence to justify pumping millions of gallons of water from rural counties, according to a court brief.
They maintain the authority failed to show it needs the added water for the Las Vegas area and questioned whether the authority can finance the $15 billion pipeline project.
Local governments, ranchers, farmers and conservation groups filed a brief Thursday in District Court in Ely asking a judge to overturn the state’s decision allowing the Water Authority to take 83,988 acre feet of water a year from four rural valleys in Eastern Nevada.
Simeon Herskovits, attorney for the group, said the decision will result in taking “every last drop of available water” from the valleys.
If allowed to stand, there will be a “serious and catastrophic impact” on the residents and economy of those rural areas and it will impact existing water rights.
Senior Deputy Attorney General Bryan Stockton, representing the state, will file his opening brief on April 15. Senior District Judge Robert Estes will hear oral arguments June 13-14 in Ely.
Herskovits, of the Advocates for Community and Environment in El Prado, N.M., maintains the Water Authority’s estimate of the population growth in the Las Vegas area is too high and is based on outdated data.
He said the pipeline isn’t needed and the Water Authority could implement more effective conservation programs.

why are these morons like wayne newton allowed to pump thousands of gallons of water a day to water grass on 40 acres of "ranch" in the desert and not charged a nickel---how is it that some people are "grandfathered" in and don't need to conserve at all, and others are charged thousands of dollars in rate increases and don't have any grass and are trying to conserve! I've been here over 30 years--why am i not "grandfathered" in and these other people don't pay squat!!!! and they waste water like it is nothing. The snwd is a poorly run organization that operates like fascist.
Pat Mulroy runs SNWA like a mafia don or gang leader. If you don't do what she and SNWA wants, you are threatened with harm. It's not physical, but the destruction of careers and companies. SNWA also bribes officials to get their way. SNWA is like a runaway train that needs to be stopped before there is total destruction. Hopefully someone will have the balls to stand up to this organization. An FBI investigation into their bribery and intimidation tactics would be nice.
As long as we are wasting tap water by filling lakes around houses, we do not deserve a single drop of water from anywhere else.
PERIOD. END OF STORY.
This past year, SNWA told folks to go ahead and plant their LAWNS. Now, that does not sound like a water conservation effort, does it? So this action leads me to believe that there IS enough water, and that SNWA is simply grabbing White Pine County and Lincoln County's water as a form of power and manipulation.
It would truly be devastating to take the water from up north, as folks do NOT have an abundance, as SNWA suggests, and in fact, the City of Ely has had a water rationing program in effect for years, and Mt.Wheeler power puts a preminum price on pumping water from wells on ranches.
Stop the madness, initiate a building moratorium in Clark County, and allow ONLY SUSTAINABLE GROWTH.
Blessings and Peace,
Star
