A new roller coaster with a 70-foot drop and negative G forces will replace the flume ride this year at Circus Circus.

Construction will begin in a few weeks for the El Loco roller coaster. Only the second of its kind in the United States, the coaster should be speeding with screaming riders under the pink Adventuredome by December, officials for MGM Resorts International said this afternoon.

Designed by S&S Worldwide of Logan, Utah, the coaster will feature a negative 1.5 vertical-G drop that dives over, under and backwards. The ride includes a 45-degree banked outward turn and an 180-degree barrel roll. It also features what the company describes as a "greater-than-straight-down diving drop" during the 75-second ride. The open four-person cars are supposed to give riders a sensation of flying as they race along 1,300 feet of track.

El Loco coasters have set world records for steep first drops at angles ranging from 111 and 120.5 degrees. The other El Loco coasters are located in Indiana, France, England and Australia. A fifth is under construction and set to open this year in China. The Circus Circus ride will be the first of its kind indoors.

“The addition of El Loco to the Adventuredome is a significant move in our efforts to entice a new generation of roller coaster lovers,” Tom Nolan, vice president of operations for Adventuredome, said in a statement. “We are committed to reinventing the Adventuredome experience with fresh and exciting rides for new and repeat guests,”

The new coaster replaces the Rim Runner, one of the four original attractions at Adventuredome, which at five acres is the world's largest indoor amusement park.
