At UNLV athletic department meetings, when head coaches from all of the sports would gather with administrators to discuss the topic of the day, Rebels Athletic Director Jim Livengood gave that pole position to academics.

The UNLV women’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament Friday for just the third time in school history. The No. 57 ranked Rebels (20-7) won four of six singles matches against No. 27 Tulsa in the NCAA first round, erasing an early deficit after doubles play for a 4-3 victory and spot in the second round.

He’s retiring, but Jim Livengood isn’t tired. That was the message from the UNLV athletic director who on Wednesday announced he would step away after three and a half years with the university. His decision is effective June 30.

Former UNLV golfer Adam Scott has finally won a major golf championship. Scott rolled in a birdie on the second playoff hole Sunday at the Masters, beating Angel Cabrera to capture his first major championship and earn the prized green jacket.

The UNLV women’s basketball team’s season ended for the second straight season against New Mexico in the Mountain West Conference tournament quarterfinals at the Thomas & Mack Center. Thursday, the No. 4 seeded Lady Rebels squandered a double-digit first-half lead, falling to the Lobos, 72-59.

When the UNLV baseball team finished five games under .500 last season, it was the first time since the late 1980s that coach Tim Chambers posted a nonwinning record. That season, he was coaching local power Bishop Gorman High’s junior varsity team, which finished 9-9. The third-year UNLV coach takes most of the blame for the struggles last year.

Joey Lauria wasn’t ready to play Division I baseball. When Lauria, a 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher, graduated from Legacy High in 2010, he was signed to join the team at UNLV. But new Rebels' coach Tim Chambers had other ideas, telling Lauria — who was a recruit of former coach Buddy Gouldsmith — he wasn’t part of the Rebels’ plans.
