- Being included in the USA Basketball Men’s National Team mini-camp next month in Las Vegas is something Golden State guard Harrison Barnes doesn’t take lightly. “It was always fun watching those Olympics,” Barnes said. “Everyone has seen those highlights of the Dream Team and Redeem Team, and all those USA Basketball teams that accomplished so much. Just to be considered for a spot on the world team or Olympics is such an honor. I’m just thankful to be included.”

- Players on the Western High School football team had just finished a morning workout in the school’s weight room this week when coach Donnie Davis told them they had more weight to lift. - Tony Miller and his crew of oddsmakers at the Golden Nugget began preparing for this day in January. Friday, the Golden Nugget was the first Nevada casino to release college football betting numbers for the upcoming season, posting lines on 240 games.

- The UNLV football team will be a betting underdog in its initial two games of the season. The Golden Nugget at 1 p.m. Friday will open betting on 240 college football games for the fall, including three contests involving the hometown Rebels. The downtown property is the first local establishment to release college football odds for 2013.

- The new owners of the Las Vegas 51s plan to build a new stadium for the Triple-A baseball team in Summerlin, abandoning their downtown location. It’s being labeled as a family-friendly facility complete with the player and fan amenities lacking at Cashman Field. Still, there have been some vocal opponents of the move.

- When Donnell Pumphrey finally made his way into the endzone Saturday during the West Charleston Lions Club 42nd Annual All-Star Football Game at Bishop Gorman’s Fertitta Field, the Canyon Springs High senior running back stopped and did the Heisman Trophy pose. Only time will tell if Pumphrey wins the Heisman Trophy, but on this scoring run, Pumphrey sure looked like a superstar.

- Valley High 2014 defensive end Noble Hall didn’t waste time committing to the college football program he felt was the perfect fit. San Diego State offered the 6-foot-4, 235-pound Hall a scholarship Friday night. Saturday morning, he verbally committed.
